suri cruise heels.jpg

So we all saw the recent pictures of Suri Cruise wearing kitten heels on a shopping trip in Boston with mum Katie Holmes.

Not the footwear most of us would choose for such an outing, but before we cry out in alarm and become overly critical (as, I must admit, was my initial reaction), let's put this into perspective.

Most mothers with a three-year-old girl will know how much they love to dress up as princesses and totter around in their mummy's shoes.

I don't have any daughters but even my boys, from the age of around two, have made a bee-line for my most sparkly and highest party shoes and have made gallant attempts to strut their stuff up and down the landing in them (I don't get to wear them all that often so they might as well!).

So, although it is easy to gasp in shock about a mother allowing her daughter to wear heels when not obviously playing dress-up, perhaps this was just a case of one mother indulging her little girl's princess fantasy.

Thankfully, Katie proved that she knows a thing or too about the reality of footwear and shopping trips and Suri was later changed into a much more appropriate, practical and way cuter pair of pink pumps.

Let's hope she sticks to the flats from now on. Already hailed as the fashion leader among the pre-school set, Suri's choice of footwear could easily spark a new trend of tottering tots. Now that would be something to see!

There must have been a lot of twinkles in celebrities eyes over the last few months as this week we are delighted to hear of not one, not two, not three but four pregnancy announcements!

sara cox.jpgWinning the prize for the most modern way to share this news is Radio One DJ Sara Cox who announced that she is expecting her third child though latest social networking phenomenon, Twitter.

News travels impossibly fast on this virtual super-highway, so let's hope she got round to telling all the family and friends first!

Meanwhile, rumours that Brazilian beauty Gisele and husband Tom Brady are expecting a baby have finally been confirmed with the coupe announcing that their baby is due in December.

Next up, Irish actor Colin Farrell confirmed at the weekend that he is to become a father for the second time. The Dubliner, who starred in black comedy In Bruges, confirmed his actress girlfriend is expecting the couple's first baby.

zucker.jpgAnd finally, England footballer Joe Cole and wife Carly Zucker who were married three months ago, have announced that their 'honeymoon baby' dreams have come true and they are expecting their first baby in six months. Ms Zucker is already sporting a tiny baby bump.

With all these yummy mummys in waiting, we can look forward to plenty more bump-envy in the months ahead, and who knows, if all these parents-to-be catch on to the Twitter craze, we can expect to hear a lot more of the pitter patter of tiny tweets!

Mel B.jpgOh dear, oh dear, oh dear. What did Mel B do to her daughter's hair? This, Ms B, is not a good look for most people, let alone a two-year-old. And little Angel is not the only celebrity child to fall victim to their scissor happy parents.

Much has been made of the fact that Angel Iris, Mel's second child, has been kept out of the media spotlight. Now we know why. Her mum was waiting for her unsuspecting daughter's hair to grow so she could give her this terrible hairstyle.

Some may call it funky, cute, cool, edgy. Not me. I think it looks absolutely dread-ful (sorry, couldn't resist) and leads me to ask the question, why can't celebrity children be left as children, rather than being turned into fashion statements? Why do celebrity parents insist on using their kids to try and make themselves look cool? I shouldn't think for one minute that Angel requested this style after browsing through several Celebrity Hair magazines. I doubt whether she ran squealing with delight out of the salon, checking her reflection in shop windows as she toddled by.

So we have to ask, just who is this haircut really for? Is Mel afraid of giving herself such a drastic 'do', so is trying it out on her daughter first? Or does she know that Eddie Murphy has a passionate dislike for Mohicans so has done this simply to wind him up?!

Whatever the reason, let's just be thankful that Angel has comedic genes running through her veins. With her mum giving her hairstyles like that at such a tender age, she's certainly going to need a good sense of humour.

madonna.jpgMercy James, the latest addition to Madonna's ever-growing brood, is reportedly settling quickly into her new, celebrity life.

As Madonna continues her Sticky and Sweet tour which will see her play in France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Russia, Sweden and many other countries before finishing in Tel Aviv this September (not bad for a fifty year old!), she will be giving little Mercy a crash course in how to be the daughter of a major celebrity.

A struggle from the outset, things now seem to be settling down to normality for 'M and M' - or at least, what will become normality. A fairytale ending, we would imagine, for the little girl who, a month ago, was living a very basic existence in Africa.

In our willingness to believe the Cinderella story, let's not forget that Mercy is still just a four-year-old, whose life has been turned upside down. She is without anything or anyone familiar. In every sense imaginable, her world has changed beyond all recognition. Life doesn't come much plusher than the Ritz Hotel in Paris - Malawi must seem like a very, very long way away.

Whatever Madonna's reasons for fighting so hard to adopt this little girl, we will never really know, but something within her insisted on becoming Mercy's mum. She may have got the job, but it will take a long time and much more than a few fancy hotels for Madonna to become Mercy's mum in the truest sense of the word.

For Madonna and child, let's hope their new life together becomes old and familiar very soon.

angelina-jolie-pb.jpgI had to smile, albeit wryly, at the latest pictures of Angelina Jolie returning from a dance class in LA with daughters Shiloh and Zahara this week.

La Jolie looked stunning, as usual, in what seems to be her trademark 'mum-about-town' look of flowing dress, flip flops and sunnies. What are the odds she's hiding another bump under there somewhere?!

Seeing these snaps made me wonder: just how do celeb mums do it? Why are the girls not throwing huge temper tantrums at having to leave the dance class? Where is the unavoidable spillage on either child, or mother? How does Angelina manage to walk through the lurking paparazzi time and time again, without a hair out of place and without having to carry at least one screaming child under her arm, or having to resort to chocolate bribes to calm them down? Are celebrity children just not born that way?

I imagine a small army of nannies leaving the dance class through a heavily guarded back door carrying standard issue bags full of messed up clothes, Dora sippy cups, tacky plastic toys, empty crisp packets and sweetie wrappers, en route to a secret underground bunker to destroy the evidence of the 'before' while we are left with the picture perfect images of the 'after'.

brad-ang1-b.jpgIn any event, these latest images have only served to reignite the rumours about the twins Knox and Vivienne who celebrate their first birthday this weekend. They haven't been seen much in public since their birth and not at all since January. Suffering another bout of the dreaded 'Suri Cruise Syndrome', we all leap to ridiculous conclusions about their general well-being, suitability to be photographed or actual existence.

If reports are to be believed, they suffer various allergies and mum and dad feel it is best to keep them out of the public glare for now. This probably means they are being looked after by the army of nannies in the secret underground bunker. Let's hope they emerge into the LA sunshine for the much anticipated birthday celebrations.

katie-price.jpgSo, the Jordan/Katie circus continues.

Not content with disgracing herself in Ibiza, Katie showed up on a night out in London this week.

As a mother, I am at a loss to understand her behaviour. In the middle of such an acrimonious spilt, what has happened to her sense of responsibility to her children? When, exactly, does she see them, apart from for a brief shopping trip in Brighton?

I'm sure this is a terrible time for her, but could someone please, please remind her of the three little children who are stuck in the middle of this whole debacle. Is it really surprising that they are suddenly very clingy? The poor little things are probably desperate for some security and stability.

Katie has, of course, defended her recent antics and insists that she is a good mum saying, "I work hard, I'm a mum, I'm a young woman and I'm going through a split. And I bet you loads of women would do the same."

andres-b.jpgOh Katie - how naïve you really are. Actually, 'loads of women' would be much more likely to tough it out at home, put on a brave face and do everything humanly possible to make sure their children felt loved and secure at such a dreadful time for them.

To the general public, Ms Price may, first and foremost, be a celebrity. To her children, she is simply mummy. As she lurches from Katie to Jordan and back again, it remains to be seen whether, at some stage, the mother within also turns up.
