Bandslam is a movie about a Battle of the Bands competition starring Vanessa Hudgens. My immediate expectations were something along the lines of a typically cheesy affair that would mostly appeal to the tween market, but in fact, I was pleasantly surprised. The movie is quirky and funny and a little bit darker than most of the movies in this genre. The characters are interesting and the actors work really well together. It tells the story of Will Burton (Gaelan Connell), a music lover and major David Bowie fan, who can't wait to move to a new school and start his life over. He befriends Charlotte (Alyson Michalka) and agrees to manage her band in preparation for Bandslam - a competition for bands from local schools, the winner of which receives a prize of a recording contract. Meanwhile he also befriends Sam (Vanessa Hudgens), but his commitment to the band threatens to put an end to their budding romance. And as the competition draws closer, obstacles threaten to ruin Will's band's chances of super-stardom.
Will's Mum is played by the ever hilarious Lisa Kudrow. I must say I really enjoyed this movie and have since been humming along to its rockin' soundtrack!
