Sex and the £4.50 dress

Well, there's a sight I never thought I'd see. Sarah Jessica Parker - champion of £500-a-pair Manolo Blahnik shoes, style icon for millions of women across the globe (myself included) - wearing a dress that cost her £4.50. £4.50! What's more, if I hadn't been told how much - or rather, how little - it cost, I would never have suspected. It's really pretty. Perfect for summer. Well done Sarah BLOGsarah-jessica-parker-b.jpgfor proving you can look fab even on a really, really tight budget!

Such a shame there's no UK outlet for her line. It looks like I'll have to take an extra case on my next trip to New York, as I'll be making a beeline to see what other bargains I can find on the rails. If it's good enough for SJP it's good enough for me...

All this Sarah Jessica Parker talk is sending my excitement levels over the Sex And The City film through the roof. Less than a month to go until we get to find out if Carrie gets her happy ending. I can't wait!

Sure enough, this exact dress can be purchased (yellow/green color too) for $8.98 at my local shopping mall. All of her dresses and vests have a nice inside lining. I'd expect to see 2to4 times the price at a more upscale shop for the quality. Accessories such as belts, costume jewelry and shoes didn't seem as nice of quality as the dresses and shorts. There is a much bigger selection in store than on her website, but with all the "Grand Openings" listed, it probably won't be too long before she branches out to a store near you!

Can I buy it online? I'd like to get one for the wife.

Her site says nothing online to mail order yet. http://www.bittensjp.com/ but it reads like she is just getting started in branching out. Telling some girlfriends, they read or heard that SJP had some very humble beginings. I like that she is not making a blatant political statement of some sort with her clothes line.

Lori, what do you mean, "a blatant political statement"?

K-T, I mean SJP advertises on her site that it's meant to be discounted clothing so even those with very small incomes can still wear something stylish and nice designed by her.... and does not say that she's raising funds for her own political agenda and ideas.

Yeah, I see what you mean. It's nice she's thinking of us gals with a small pay cheque. I don't know how they can make the clothes so cheap though... Steve and Barry's say they don't use sweat shops, which is good.

Is it just that other stores have everything ridiculously over priced?

I've never heard what the mark up is on typical, non- designer clothes. For jewelry, I hear it's approx. 400% markup ....
