The controversy surrounding John Sergeant's appearance on Strictly Come Dancing seems to have escalated to such an extreme that he has decided to leave the show. Personally, I think he was a enjoyable addition to the programme and it's sad to see him go. Don't get me wrong - if I'd had to face the criticism he has, I'm sure I'd be feeling the pressure too, so it's no wonder he wanted to bow out gracefully. But at least now, as John freely admits himself, someone with more talent is free to scoop the crown of best celeb dancer.
But to be honest I don't think John deserved quite all the criticism he got in the first place. He was thoroughly entertaining and improving - if slowly - week by week. And the public did keep choosing him to stay. What was the problem?
Perhaps it was a no-win situation. By going he's disappointing the many fans who voted to keep him in the series; by staying he might have prevented someone with better dancing capabilities winning what is, after all, a dancing show.
One thing's for sure though, his appearances on the dancefloor have brought an even bigger dose of fun to what was an already super series.
